A while ago I had done some major home improvement changes to my house. I had Columbus security systems put in a system, I had the walls and ceilings redone and I had hired a roofing company to come mend the damage after a particularly nasty hail storm. The roof was the major thing that needed fixing and I relied on a company that I had not heard about but my friends could vouch for. Boy, were we wrong.
What I should have done immediately was check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure these people were on the up and up. Not only did the company employ an entire staff of day laborers, their callous and destructive construction destroyed 8 mature bushes I had in my yard. While the company agreed to replace the bushes, only 2 of them survived. This was nothing compared to what happened next. My insurance had agreed to let this company work on my roof and use entirely new materials. I got a leak the next time a storm came and it was all because the company used old materials.
Eventually I settled up with the roofers, but all of this could have been avoided if I knew what I was getting into. Don’t be afraid to consult with the BBB before you get into bed with a roofer.
